Western Sydney Airport Opens 25 October 2026: First-Month Transfer Checklist
Passenger flights at Western Sydney International begin on Sunday 25 October. The airport is ready—but every traveller will be using its terminal, roads and pickup process for the first time.
Quick answer: confirm that your ticket says WSI, not SYD; use the full flight number and terminal destination when booking; choose between the public bus network, the free St Marys link, parking, taxi, rideshare or a pre-booked transfer; and allow extra time during the opening period while real-world traffic and meeting patterns settle.
Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport is no longer a distant infrastructure project. Its official site confirms that passenger operations begin on 25 October 2026 at 40 Nancy Drive, Luddenham. Jetstar is scheduled to operate the first domestic passenger service, with international services beginning soon afterwards.
This article is intentionally different from AT247’s existing Western Sydney International Airport transport guide. That page explains the airport and its transport choices broadly. This checklist focuses on what passengers should confirm during the first weeks of operation.
What is confirmed for opening
| Item | Current official information | What the traveller should do |
|---|---|---|
| Passenger opening | Sunday 25 October 2026 | Recheck the airline and airport before travel |
| Airport code | WSI | Do not confuse it with Sydney Airport’s SYD code |
| Road access | M12 connects the airport with Sydney’s motorway network | Use live traffic and allow an opening-period buffer |
| Public buses | Routes connect WSI with major Western Sydney centres | Check the exact route, service span and connections |
| St Marys link | Free airport bus every 30 minutes from first passenger flight | Allow for the bus–train interchange and luggage |
| Airport metro | Not operating at passenger opening; WSI says 2027 | Do not plan an opening-month rail journey to the terminal |
The official WSI transport page is the authority for current access. It states that five bus services operate between the airport and Penrith, Leppington, Liverpool, Campbelltown and Mount Druitt, generally every 30 minutes from 5 am to 10 pm. It also describes the free WSI Link to St Marys, scheduled every 30 minutes from 4:30 am until midnight Sunday–Thursday and 1 am Friday–Saturday. Timetables and operating conditions can change, so use the live trip planner.
Compare the complete opening-period journey
| Option | May suit | Confirm before travelling |
|---|---|---|
| Public bus | Western Sydney passengers whose origin fits a direct route | Stop, timetable, baggage practicality and flight-hour coverage |
| WSI Link + train | Passengers comfortable transferring at St Marys | Total door-to-door time, interchange and last service |
| Drive and park | Travellers who want their own vehicle on return | Correct car park, reservation, walking route and return access |
| Taxi or rideshare | Flexible travellers comfortable with on-demand supply | Designated zone, live availability, price and vehicle capacity |
| Pre-booked transfer | Families, groups, business travellers and fixed itineraries | Flight tracking, meeting method, vehicle, luggage and quote scope |
The lowest advertised price is not automatically the best plan. Count the journey from the real home, hotel or office—not from the nearest station. Add transfers, waiting, luggage handling, parking and the consequences of missing a check-in deadline. A direct bus could be excellent from one Western Sydney suburb and irrelevant from another.
Check the airport code before booking ground transport
Sydney will have two different passenger airports. WSI is at Luddenham; SYD is Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport at Mascot. A transfer booked to the wrong airport cannot be repaired with a quick terminal change. Read the flight confirmation, airline departure notice and airport code before entering the pickup address.
This is especially important when another person makes the booking. Executive assistants, relatives and travel agents should copy the flight number and airport code into the transfer rather than writing only “Sydney Airport”. Travellers using separate airline tickets should verify whether an airport change is involved and allow a substantial buffer.
Allow first-month time without inventing a fixed duration
Mapping estimates cannot yet reflect months of ordinary passenger traffic at a brand-new airport. Opening-week road behaviour, unfamiliar lane choices, car-park access and terminal wayfinding may all affect the real journey. AT247 recommends starting with the airline’s check-in requirement and working backwards using current traffic plus a sensible opening-period allowance.
Do not turn a general suburb-to-airport estimate into a guarantee. Weather, incidents and peak traffic still matter. A pickup from Parramatta, the Blue Mountains, Liverpool or the Sydney CBD is a different trip even when the flight is identical.
Prepare the arrival pickup before take-off
For an arriving passenger, save the driver’s number and meeting instructions before the flight. Follow airport signage after collecting luggage and do not assume private cars, taxis and rideshare use the same area. The first operational month is precisely when a written meeting plan matters most.
A pre-booked transfer request should contain the airline, full flight number, scheduled arrival, passenger mobile number, final address, passenger count and every bag or oversized item. Flight tracking helps a provider respond to timing changes, but it does not replace accurate booking information. AT247’s airport transfer booking checklist explains the details to prepare.
Australian-based, with a person checking the booking
AT247 is based in Australia, and every transfer is reviewed by a person. Once the driver is assigned, the traveller can connect with them before pickup—particularly useful at a new airport where meeting instructions may be unfamiliar.
Families and groups need capacity, not only seats
Four passengers with four large suitcases, hand luggage and a pram are not the same booking as four commuters carrying backpacks. Describe the complete load so the vehicle can be matched properly. Request child restraints in advance where needed and identify mobility equipment or assistance requirements before confirmation.
Larger parties should decide whether one people mover or several vehicles fits the luggage and arrival plan. The family airport transfer guide and group transfer guide cover those questions in more detail.
WSI first-month checklist
- Confirm the ticket says WSI and note the full flight number.
- Recheck the airline and official WSI site before departure.
- Compare the journey from the real address, not a city label.
- Use live bus, road and parking information.
- Allow a first-month navigation and traffic buffer.
- Record every passenger, bag, restraint and mobility item.
- Save the arrival meeting instructions before flying.
- Keep the passenger’s phone switched on after landing.

When does Western Sydney International Airport open?
WSI’s official site states that passenger flights begin on Sunday 25 October 2026. Recheck the airport and airline before travel.
Is the metro running when WSI opens?
No. WSI currently says the airport metro is set to open in 2027. Road services, public buses and the free St Marys airport link serve the terminal at passenger opening.
Is WSI the same as Sydney Airport?
No. WSI is Western Sydney International at Luddenham. SYD is Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport at Mascot. Always use the airport code on the flight booking.
Can I pre-book an AT247 transfer to WSI?
Request a quote using WSI, the exact flight, complete address, passengers, luggage and any special requirements. Service is subject to availability and booking confirmation.
How early should I leave for WSI?
Use the airline’s check-in requirement, live traffic and your actual origin. During the first month, include additional time for unfamiliar roads, parking or terminal wayfinding rather than relying on one universal estimate.
Checked 6 October 2026. Opening arrangements, airline schedules, pickup zones and public transport may change. Confirm them with WSI, the airline and Transport for NSW before travel.
